VISITBRITAIN.COM IS BEST IN THE WORLD
VisitBritain was named the World’s Leading Tourism Authority Internet Site at the World Travel Awards yesterday (12 December 2007) by more than 200,000 travel and tourism professionals for its international consumer website,  www.visitbritain.com.

ENJOY ENGLAND CELEBRATES CULTURE IN 2008
2008 marks Liverpool’s position as European Capital of Culture, welcoming nearly two million additional visitors to enjoy a calendar of over 300 events throughout the year. It is also the year that London takes the torch from Beijing as host city for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and Britain, as host nation, begins a four-year, nationwide Cultural Olympiad.

NEW CAMPAIGN CREATES THE GOLDEN AGE OF SET-JETTERS 
National tourism agency, VisitBritain has launched a new film tourism campaign ahead of the release of The Golden Age, starring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen. Receiving its premiere on 23 October and on general release from 2 November, the follow-up to Elizabeth follows the life of Queen Elizabeth I and features a wealth of English locations. Tourism bosses expect it to draw international and British visitors to iconic and heritage attractions throughout Britain.

FUNDING ANNOUNCED FOR VISITBRITAIN FOR 2008 – 2011  

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport today announced a reduced three-year funding settlement for VisitBritain, the national tourism agency.  The funding level will be £47.6 million in 2008/09, £45.1 million in 2009/10 and £40.6 million in 2010/11.  This compares with the current grant in aid of £49.6 million.

VISITENGLAND LAUNCHES TO PROVIDE STRONG LEADERSHIP FOR ENGLAND’S TOURISM
VisitEngland, a new leadership and stakeholder board for England’s tourism industry, launches today. It has been developed following two years of consultation with around 70 ‘Partners for England’ representing the strength and depth of the nation’s £70 billion visitor economy.

ENJOY ENGLAND: EUROPE’S LEADING TOURIST INFORMATION WEBSITE
Enjoy England, www.enjoyengland.com, was named Europe’s leading tourist information website at the 14th annual World Travel Award on Tuesday 9 October 2007. The website faced stiff competition from other countries including Spain, Ireland, Sweden and Portugal.

CAR CRAWLER TO BECOME VISITBRITAIN'S SOLE RENTAL DISTRIBUTION PARTNER
- CarTrawler (www.cartrawler.com) has today announced a three year partnership to become the sole car rental distribution partner for national tourism agency, VisitBritain. It will offer car rental on the 46 www.visitbritain.com websites in 26 languages around the globe and on the domestic site, www.enjoyengland.com.

NEW CAMPAIGN TO CAPITALISE ON POPULARITY OF CITY BREAK DESTINATIONS
-  New research released today (24 September) by VisitBritain, the national tourism agency, suggests that we Brits are embracing the buzz around city break destinations - eight out of the top ten most visited destinations in England are cities. The number of overnight visits made to the eight cities in 2006 was more than 22.8 million, demonstrating vibrant city breaks on your own doorstep are of huge appeal to domestic tourists.

CUMBRIA BEAUTY SPOT NAMED AS BRITAIN'S FAVOURITE VIEW

– The nation yesterday voted Wastwater in the Lake District, Cumbria as Britain’s Favourite View. Following a heated live final on ITV1 last night, Wastwater, championed by Coronation Street star Sally Whittaker, beat stiff competition from the three other finalists: Katherine Jenkins and Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower; Janet Street Porter with Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland and Eddie Irvine’s Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland.

HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES CONFIRMED AS PATRON OF SECOND BRITISH TOURISM WEEK

– Britain’s fifth largest industry – worth £85 billion – contributes 3.4% of the nation’s GVA – – employs 2.1 million people – 7.7% of the workforce – more jobs than construction or transport – – generated over £15 billion in export earning in 2006 – – domestic and overseas visitors pay over £14 billion in tax, paying for 30,000 nurses.

VISITBRITAIN SEARCHES FOR TOURIST INFORMATION STARS
- VisitBritain’s England marketing division is conducting a search for five new ‘faces’ of tourist information to star in a national advertising campaign.The organisation is inviting staff from the 225 tourist information centres in its new Enjoy England Official Partner Programme to nominate themselves or their colleagues for their in-depth tourism knowledge, professionalism, personality or just the ability to go the extra mile. Five winners from around England will be announced in August and will then feature in the campaign to encourage visitors to use tourist information centres when on holiday.

Abscond ! Skedaddle ! Bolt ! Flee ! Decamp to the countryside with help from Rural Escapes, the new campaign from Enjoy England. Aimed primarily at city-dwellers for whom the countryside is perceived as inaccessible, the campaign comprises a jam-packed website and handbook on all things rural and fun. Under an hour from all our major cities are places with that ‘middle-of-nowhere’ feeling – Rural Escapes  uncovers these hidden gems for those who might not know where to look.

VISITBRITAIN PLANS FOR ASIAN EXPANSION AND 2012 GAMES
VisitBritain, the national tourism agency, has updated its structure and staffing to enable it to take full advantage of the opportunities offered in the coming years.   The organisation wants to be in the best shape to maximise the benefits offered to the visitor economy by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games ahead of the proposed joint launch of the 2012 tourism strategy in the summer. In addition, the increasingly competitive nature of tourism requires continued investment in the fastest growing tourism markets such as Asia.

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY AND REGENERATED LIVERPOOL WIN TOURISM ‘OSCAR’
A musical genius and a regenerated northern city have been recognised with a tourism ‘Oscar’ at the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2007. Sir Paul McCartney today, (18 April) received recognition for his Outstanding Contribution to Tourism, an award he shares with his home city of Liverpool, which becomes European Capital of Culture 2008 next year.
