VisitEngland is pleased to announce a new Breakfast award for its hotel and guest accommodation quality scheme members. Sponsored by Kellogg’s, the new award recognises those hotels and B&Bs that offer their guests a quality and choice of breakfast, service and hospitality that exceeds what would be expected at their star rating. It will help visitors find those places where the owners, managers, chefs and staff have gone the extra mile to ensure the breakfast will exceed expectations.

We have deliberately set the thresholds higher for establishments at the higher star ratings, to reflect guests’ expectations.

The announcement of the first awards was in November 2009. 169 hotels (17%) and 523 guest accommodation businesses (7%) achieved the Breakfast award, with examples at all star ratings. For one in four businesses, the Breakfast award is their first VisitEngland award (i.e. no Silver or Gold award).

The Assessor scores the breakfast every time he/she stays overnight, so the scores for the Breakfast award will be taken from your last overnight assessment.

For hotels, overnight assessments are now every year.

For guest accommodation the schedule is:
• 5 star and/or Gold awards: overnight stay every year
• 4 star and/or Silver awards: overnight stay every other year
• 1 to 3 star: overnight stay every third year

The Breakfast award is valid until the next assessment and from January 2010 the award will trigger automatically after assessment, as do the Silver and Gold awards.

You can check your potential for achieving a Breakfast award by taking a look at the quality scores here. If your most recent assessment scores don’t quite make the grade for the Breakfast award but are close, you may request an overnight stay for your next assessment so that your breakfast can be assessed for the opportunity to achieve an award. Due to the number of requests we may receive, please note that your scores must be very close to those required to achieve an award to be able to request for an overnight stay.

Accommodation with a Breakfast award is also searchable on both visitbritain.com and enjoyengland.com.

For those who have achieved a Breakfast award, the electronic version of the Breakfast award can be supplied as a jpeg or eps file – please email qualityintourism@GSLGlobal.com with your request. As well as a certificate, businesses will receive a small sample of stickers that can also be ordered from Alpen Signs (£8.50 for 500), as can the exterior Breakfast award sign which costs £42.

As Kellogg’s is sponsoring this award, we are working closely with them and we will soon be jointly announcing a special new competition which only VisitEngland Breakfast award winners may enter. So watch this space…!
