The Queen’s 80th birthday celebrations
On 21st April 2006, The Queen was greeted by crowds of well-wishers as she celebrated her 80th birthday at Windsor Castle. There were also a number of other events planned throughout June last year to celebrate The Queen’s official birthday on 17th. National Service of Thanksgiving

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended a National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral followed by a lunch given by the Lord Mayor and the Corporation of London. The service was broadcast live on radio and was shown on television later that day.

Flag flying

The Union flag was flown from government buildings from 8am until sunset on The Queen's official birthday.
Trooping the Colour
17th June 2006
The Queen's official birthday was marked by the annual Trooping the Colour parade at 11am on 17 June 2006.
The event consisted of a military parade and march by Household Troops on Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall. The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, rode in a carriage during the parade and took the salutes from a dais (a temporary stage) on Horseguards Parade.

Children's Party at the Palace

The Queen held a special children's party at Buckingham Palace for Her Majesty's 80th birthday to celebrate British children's literature and the magic of books.
Characters such as Postman Pat, Paddington Bear, Bob the Builder, Thomas the Tank Engine, the White Rabbit and Mary Poppins attended the tea party, which was held in the Buckingham Palace garden.
After tea, a special TV show starring many of these characters was broadcast live from Buckingham Palace.
