The world's best in action...

T

he English may sometimes underachieve when it comes to fulfilling sporting potential. But when it comes to hosting sporting events, this sports-mad country is in a field of its own.

Where most other nations tend to be synonymous with only a couple of world-class events, England is chock full of them. Perhaps this is because so many sports were invented here, from football to rugby, cricket to polo. It means that sporting events here tend to marry sporting excellence with pageantry and tradition - a beguiling mix.

Start with the annual marquee events that draw the crowds year-on-year. Wimbledon, the world’s most glamorous tennis event, is held each June and July, while April’s Grand National, held at Aintree in Liverpool, is the classic National Hunt race.

Football fans are equally spoiled for choice, although the FA Cup final represents the romantic beating heart of the sport, where a team of minnows has every chance of facing a Premier League giant. The final, each May, is one of English sport’s classic occasions.

Then there are the epochal stadiums, Twickenham and Lord’s, the homes of rugby union and cricket respectively. These great venues host test matches regularly, so check to see if anything is on for a fantastic occasion. Similarly, the British Grand Prix is held each July, and sees the glitterrati flock to see Button and Hamilton take on their rivals.

Finally, take in one of the truly British events, Royal Ascot, Cowes Week or the Henley Royal Regatta, for a true taste of English sporting eccentricity. Silly hats optional, but entirely recommended.
