Outdoor sculpture trails and innovative contemporary exhibitions

M

asterpieces may be difficult to create but in England they’re certainly easy to find. At London’s Tate Modern for example, the exhibition space itself is almost as spectacular as the paintings (like Rothkos, Picassos and Warhols) that hang on the walls.

Our favourite feature in this former 1920s power station is the Turbine Hall, which covers a whopping five storeys and 3,400 square metres. Past exhibitions have featured sunflower seeds, a giant slide and white plastic cubes.

However, if you prefer your art a bit more conventional (albeit only slightly), head to The Lowry in Salford. The gallery honours the city’s most famous artist and his trademark “stick men” in a gleaming aluminium building on Salford Quays waterside.

Housed in a Norman Foster designed building, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is just a short walk from Norwich city centre. Situated in the grounds of University of East Anglia, there are special exhibitions changing every few months and a bustling program of events.
