Exeter
The beating heart of Devon
E
xeter combines a vibrant culture scene with the kind of atmosphere only thousands of years of history can provide. Despite having historic buildings at every turn, Devon’s capital still feels young at heart thanks to the University influence. If you want to experience some of the country’s most dramatic scenery then the River Exe, Jurassic Coast, Dartmoor and Exmoor are all close at hand.
History and Heritage
With the Cathedral, 14th century underground passageways, historic quay and Roman city walls, Exeter has a rich and varied history. You can experience Tudor life at St Nicholas Priory or simply explore the city’s medieval heritage at Tuckers Hall and ‘the house that moved’ before crossing the medieval Exe bridge to the restored Cricklepit Mill.
Arts and Culture
The creative heart of the city beats the loudest at the Phoenix Centre which celebrates visual arts as well as hosting gigs and performances. Spacex is small but perfectly formed, with contemporary art exhibited in a fantastic space. For comedy and theatre look no further than the Northcott Theatre.
Must See Attractions
If you’re afraid of the dark or claustrophobic then the Underground Passages are a no no, for everyone else it’s the most fun subterranean history lesson ever. Visit the Gothic Cathedral and marvel at the stunning ceiling and stained glass. Or you could always take a Red Coat guided tour which will show you all the sights and attractions.
Food and Drink
Offering fish and meat so local they claim to know the name of its mother, On the Waterfront is the place to go for tasty treats low on food miles. With views of the Gothic Cathedral, Michael Caines Restaurant at Abode Exeter (that’s the top chef, not the actor) is the perfect place to enjoy award-winning British and European cuisine.
Shopping
In the Quayside area of the city, you’ll find workshops selling furniture and glassware. For weird and wonderful goodies head to the cobbled Saxon-sized Gandy Street or climb Fore Street for retro clothing and records. Book Cycle in West Street offers you the unique chance to choose exactly what you pay (all proceeds go to charity) for the second-hand books on offer.
Music and Nightlife
With Exeter’s narrow alleys crammed full of atmospheric pubs, there’s plenty of choice - The Ship Inn is said to be the favourite watering-hole of Elizabethan pirate-lord, Sir Francis Drake. The Cavern is the place to catch the latest indie starlets and indulge in the finest underground DJs whereas Timepiece lets you to dance the night away to an eclectic mix of tunes.
Key Events
With celebrity chefs and tantalising tasters, the Exeter Festival of Food & Drink brings the freshest flavours each spring. Marvel at the Red Ruby Devon cattle at the Devon County Show which celebrates all things agricultural at Westpoint in May. And for the best in comedy, music and dance the city’s Summer and Autumn Festivals are hard to beat.
