He first came to national attention on joining Cy Laurie’s band in 1959, and went on to play with Monty sunshine in the 60’s, before joining Acker Bilk for a noted partnership in the early 70’s. From 1974 he led his own renowned UK band, touring extensively and recording ten albums, featuring jazz classic luminaries including Ray Foxley and Ian Wheeler. Rod moved to mainland Europe in the 1980’s, first joining the world famous Dutch swing college band, and then going on to lead his own bands from 1985. Rod Mason is particularly noted for his blistering cornet, innate sense of swing and Satchmo-inspired vocals. He is an inspiring and endlessly entertaining musician, at the peak of an outstanding career. Since 1985 Rod Mason has dominated the German jazz scene with his hot five, recreating and reinventing the excitement of the explosive early jazz of Louis Armstrong. The band has been hailed as a world-beater on its extensive tours across Europe and further afield, including South Africa and the USA. Their broad repertoire ranges from early ragtime through vintage jazz, to blues and boogie, and they are renowned for their unforgettable blend of fine musicianship, professional and sheer good humour. The Hot Five comprises a heady line up of Europe’s leading traditionalists. Andy Leggett on clarinet, Saxes and vocals, (the man behind on e of 2002’s most popular traditional jazz CD’s, the Sidney Bechet tribute “Shades of Bechet”) and Clive Fenton on sousaphone and trumpet, are both former members of Bob Kerr’s Whoopee band. Ralf Peyer is one of Germany’s most accomplished pianists- a master of many styles from ragtime to stride. Trombonist Ian Bateman, an old Mason sidekick from 10 years ago (and an alumnus of the Acker Bilk band) – boasts a fat, rich sound with a strong blues sensibility. Banjoist Sean Moyses is highly respected for both his rhythmic dexterity and for his scintillating solos.
