The Carnival Fair has always been a very important part of our Carnival as the money paid on entry is the main earner of our charity funds. Well over 30 000 people come and have a great time at the Fair every year. One of the main reasons for the Fair being so successful is that the Head Showman has always been from the same family and that the central core of the Showmen who come every year are from the same group of families. For instance, the Showman who is responsible for most of our food outlets is very proud to say that he was born at our Fair in 1927!! He says he has attended every Fair that we have organised since he was born!! Many people who come to the Fair think that it is a travelling Fair that, like a circus, goes from place to place together. This is not the case. Our Showmen only meet each other when they arrive at Chalkwell Park in the week before we open. At the end of our week they leave and go their separate ways all over the country. Another of the reasons the Fair is so successful is that the Head Showman is usually very successful in getting some of the latest and most exciting rides on the travelling fairs circuit to come to our Fair. I understand that he is very hopeful of bringing yet another exciting ride to our Carnival this year. The Showmen open rides that they consider safe for those who are disabled. We look forward to meeting all of you at yet another magnificent and exciting Carnival Fair at Chalkwell Park between Friday, 8th and Saturday, 16th August.
