Set amid woodland below the North York Moors and Cleveland Way National Trail, the sites's history spans several centuries. The 14thC ruins are the best-preserved from any Carthusian monastery in Britain. Visitors can experience the simple and austere life of a monk in the reconstructed cell and herb garden. The 17thC manor house, built on the ruins of the monastery guesthouse is a rare building of the Commonwealth periods. The gardens were also re-modelled in the 20thC to enhance the mansion.
