Needles Old Battery

Needles Old Battery
Type : Castle/Fort
Location : Totland Bay

Built in 1862 following the threat of a French invasion, this spectacularly sited fort which is now in the care of the National Trust, has a fascinating military history and some of the best views on the Island, including the Needles. For the best vantage point, visitors can climb down a spiral staircase from the parade ground into the tunnel which leads to a searchlight emplacement perched above the Needles. The Battery tearoom also has good views and refreshments.

The Battery contains displays about the part it played in the defence of the realm from the 1860s, through both World Wars. The laboratory, searchlight position and position-finding cells have all been restored and 2 original gun barrels are displayed on the parade ground. Families can discover the site using a Family Activity Pack.

Because of its remoteness, the headland was used for the development of the British Space Programme including the Black Knight rocket. New for 2007 is a display about the part played by the site in the space programme. This is housed in 2 underground rooms (only accessible by a short flight of steps) at the Needles New Battery higher up the headland. Opening times vary but generally 25 March to 28 October, Saturdays, Sundays and every day during school holidays, 10:30-16:00. There is a refreshment kiosk.
