North Norfolk Railway

North Norfolk Railway
Type : Steam Railway
Location : Sheringham

The Poppy Line (North Norfolk Railway) runs steam and vintage diesel trains from Sheringham along the coast to Weybourne and up through the heathland and pinewoods to Holt station near High Kelling. It is one of the most scenic heritage railways in Britain and carries around 125,000 passengers a year.
The three stations are beautifully preserved Victorian gems. The Sheringham terminus has won awards for its restoration. The station building at Holt was formerly at Stalham, gateway to the Broads, in the 1880s, some three years ago it was carefully dismantled and re-erected at Holt, using around 90% of the original material. Midway on the line is Weybourne, a rural station built in anticipation that the village a mile to the north would be developed into a resort. The development never happened and Weybourne today is the epitome of a sleepy country station. The station yard at Holt contains a replica of a typical Victorian goods shed, which houses the new William Marriot Museum, named after the man who built Poppy Line and ran it for 40 years.
The Museum helps you see the railway in the context of the times when it was not only the area's lifeline, but also gave birth to the tourist industry in North Norfolk. There is a railway buffet and gift shop at Sheringham station. Refreshments and souvenir items can also be bought at Holt and Weybourne stations.
All day hop-on, hop-off Rover tickets allow passengers to use the train to explore the nature trails on Kelling Heath, the beach and town of Sheringham, and the Georgian attractions of Holt (linked to the railway by a vintage bus service in summer). Dogs and cycles are welcome on the trains, and most trains have disabled access.
