Romsey Abbey

Romsey Abbey
Type : Abbey/Priory
Location : Romsey

Present church was commenced in 1120 and completed as we see it today by the middle of the 13thC. When monastic communities were dissolved, the townspeople bought the abbey church in 1544 for £100 as their parish church. Notable features are majestic Norman/early-English architecture, 2 stone-carved Saxon crucifixes and a wooden panel painting dating from the early 16thC. The abbey church is the burial place of Earl Mountbatten of Burma. An active parish church with choral tradition. Also offers Music in Romsey programme and organ recitals.
