The Ellenroad spinning-mill steam engine has a 3,000 hp engine, which has a 28ft diameter flywheel built by John McNaught of Rochdale in 1890. The engine powered the mill until 1916, when it was destroyed by fire and the mill was rebuilt in 1921, but demolished in 1986 leaving the engine house and chimney. In 1986 the Whitelees Beam Engine was acquired by the trust and is a fine example of an early beam engine from 1842. There are now three engines powered by a Lancashire Boiler.
