Wingfield Manor

Wingfield Manor
Type : Historic House/Palace
Location : Ripley

A huge ruined country mansion built around 1439. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1569, 1584 and 1585 and whilst here the plot to free Mary and overthrow Elizabeth I was hatched. The building has been unoccupied since the 1770's. Enjoy the Gothic Hall, climb the tower for magnificent views and bring a torch to find the angels and 'Green Men' in the superb vaulted undercroft.
Wingfield Manor is administered by English Heritage and will be open the FIRST SATURDAY of EACH MONTH from April to September during 2008 for PRE-BOOKED visits only. The Manor is privately owned so access is unavailable outside of these arrangements. Telephone 01246 857436 to arrange pre-booked visits.
