Since opening in 1888, the Leeds City Art Gallery has acquired a remarkable collection of British 20th century art, voted by The Times as 'probably the best outside London'. The internationally acclaimed collection of works on paper features Turner, Cotman, Cozens and Girtin. The Gallery has always tried to support the work of living artists. Early gifts include Lady Butler's Scotland Forever. The enduringly popular Leeds artist, Atkinson Grimshaw, is represented by numerous evocative, moonlit scenes. French pictures include celebrated works by Derain and Sisley.
We continue to collect contemporary artwork. Recent acquisitions include works by Bill Woodrow, Paula Rego, Gilian Ayres, Stephen Willats, Alison Wilding and Bridget Riley.
Through the generous support of the Henry Moore Foundation, the Gallery has bought many important sculptures and can now boast a modern sculpture collection second only to that of the Tate Gallery.
A variety of exhibitions and special displays ensure that the focus of the Gallery is constantly evolving. There is something to suit every taste: historic shows, as well as contemporary installations. Artists represented include national names as well as up and coming artists working in the region. Some contemporary art is for sale. Contemporary craft is on sale in the Craft Centre and Design Gallery. Why not refresh your taste buds with tempting pastries or a warming cappucchino in the Gallery Cafe?
