Chesters Roman Fort, Hadrian's Wall

Chesters Roman Fort, Hadrian's Wall
Type : Castle/Fort
Location : Humshaugh

The best-preserved example of a Roman cavalry fort in Britain, Chesters Roman Fort was built to guard the bridge which carried Hadrian’s Wall and the military road over the River North Tyne.
There is much to see on site: all four principal gateways are well presented and the entire foundations of the headquarters building are visible. By the river, the changing rooms, steam rooms and bathing areas of the bath house remain, as does the bridge abutment on the opposite river bank. The on-site museum, housed in a fine Victorian building, displays a collection of Roman finds, retrieved by local antiquarian John Clayton.
