Lindisfarne Priory and Museum

Lindisfarne Priory and Museum
Type : Abbey/Priory
Location : Holy Island

When you cross the dramatic causeway at low tide to Holy Island, you follow in the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims over 1,300 years. Lindisfarne Priory was one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England. Founded by St Aidan in AD635, the site owes its fame to St Cuthbert, the greatest of Northumbrian holy men, who lived and died there. Wander around the richly-decorated, extensive ruins, or visit the refurbished museum. There you’ll discover the fascinating story of the monks who lived on Holy Island until the monastery was suppressed in 1537.
