Chesters Walled Garden is a peaceful haven set in the wild landscape of Hadrian's Wall. The relaxed style of gardening gives a freedom to the planting that is exuberant and informal. The extensive range of herbs and flowers include a Roman herb garden, the National Collection of Thyme grown on the colourful, raised Thyme Bank, wonderful flower borders, old-fashioned roses and a knot garden. Two other National Collections are of Marjoram and Burnet. The garden has a natural feel with wildflowers used alongside rare plants, restrained by box and yew hedges. Organically run, the garden attracts diverse wildlife with its two ponds and sympathetic planting. There are an amazing 68 species of birds and red squirrels in surrounding woodland. Well-stocked nursery sells unusual perennials, herbs, wildflowers and old fashioned roses. Local honey, jams, artists' cards, herbal creams and terracotta pots on sale in the shop plus interesting garden artefacts and old garden tools.
