CORNWALL TOURISM AWARDS 2006 - Visitor Attraction of the Year - Bronze Award SW TOURISM EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2006/2007 - Large Visitor Attraction of the Year - Silver The last of 5 manorial estates in the Sithney area of Helston, Trevarno dates back to 1246 when Randolphus de Trevarno gave it his name. The estate, like many others in Cornwall, passed through the hands of many notable families with the ebb and flow of prosperity, however, in 1874 it was purchased by the Bickford-Smiths who were to stay for 120 years until 1994 when it was put up for sale. At this point the estate was purchased by an electronics company to use as a base for their headquarters. In 1996 the Fountain Garden Conservatory was built on what used to be the Billard Room and in 1998 the gardens were opened to the public for the first time on a year round basis. Since then, slowly and sympathetically the experiences and facilities offered on a visit to Trevarno have grown. The wonderfully relaxing 35 acre Victorian garden has a treasure chest of interesting features to explore including an Italian Garden, Serpentine Yew Tunnel, Lake and Victorian Boathouse. Between April and mid May, the Beech Wood becomes the Bluebell Woods, with a stunning carpet of blue with scent to match. One of the 'must see' aspects is the amazing National Museum of Gardening. Tools of all ages and complexity are displayed in ten themed areas and give all age groups insight into this aspect of 'Britishness'. Restoration of various areas continues with current projects which include the Upper Walled Garden, Gothic Potting Shed/Bothy and a recently uncovered carriageway. One of the most interesting and rewarding projects is the Organic Herbal Workshop which was the first in the UK to be granted formal certification by the Organic Farmers & Growers Association. Handmade soaps and skincare products are produced using the purest plant oils and materials available and, of course, they can be purchased too! Trevarno is not JUST another garden, there is an underlying atmosphere of relaxation and informality that is not found elsewhere. For further information please check our website on www.trevarno.co.uk. Open all year, daily from 10.30 - 5.00, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Attraction.
