Abberley & Malvern Hills Geopark
Type : Environmental Attraction
Location : Worcester
The Abberley & Malvern Hills European Geopark is comprised of some 1250 square kilometres of world-class geology. It contains rock formations of outstanding geological interest, which span over 700 million years to include some of the oldest rocks in England.
The rocks tell a fascinating story of continental collisions, shallow tropical seas, hot deserts, tropical swamps, coastal lagoons, vast ice sheets & polar deserts. These changes in ancient depositional environments & associated rock types have produced the diverse landscapes that can be seen in the Geopark today.
The European Geopark network was created in 1999 as a seal of excellence for selected areas across Europe with a geological heritage of international significance underpinned by a regional economic development strategy.
The Abberley & Malvern Hills European Geopark was awarded the UNESCO endorsed status of European Geopark in 2003.
Our vision is for a Geopark that can be enjoyed by all, offering locals, visitors, novices, enthusiasts both young & old, a wider appreciation of geology & its importance to the world round us in an exciting & enjoyable way.
