St. Botolph's Church

St. Botolph's Church
Type : Church/Chapel
Location : Boston

Known (and visible) far and wide as 'The Stump' a title which strictly belongs to its prodigious 272' tower, the tallest on any English Parish church. Architecture of the tower demonstrates that it was raised in stages between c.1425 and c.1510 in a progressive challenge to gravity, originally had two lofty storeys, then another added and finally the graceful octagonal 'lantern' crowned all. The Church was mainly built during 14th century, one of the four largest in England as befitted a port whose medieval prosperity once challenged that of London.
