Home of Prince Bishops until the foundation of the University in 1832. Part of a World Heritage Site with a Norman chapel dating from 1075 and the kitchens and Great Hall dating from 1499 and 1284 respectively. Guided tours, accommodation, banquets and wedding receptions are available. Entrance is by guided tour only. Each tour lasts about 45 minutes. Tours take place on most days out of term, and each day from Easter to 30th September. For other periods tours are on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Other events sometimes result in cancellation of tours. It is therefore advisable to check with the castle porter on 0191 334 3800 before arrival.
