Activity Detail Page
Type : Historic Site
Location : Christchurch
A carefully restored anglo-Saxon watermill only a few minutes' walk from the town centre. The working machinery forms a fascinating backdrop to a collection of milling artefacts and gift shop. Newly opened Place Mill Gallery with craft displays and changing exhibitions by local artists.
Place Mill, mentioned in the Doomsday Book, survived the dissolution of the monasteries of 1538 and continued to grind corn until 1908 when structural defects forced its closure. After 70 years as a boat shed, the Mill was purchased by the council and restored.
Place Mill is now open throughout the summer months and has its own and resident artist Robert Fielder who specialises in traditional Japanese embroidery and regular changing art exhibitions by local artists in the first flor gallery.
A ground floor gift shop has an extensive range of affordable gifts and cards.
