Wentworth Castle Gardens

Wentworth Castle Gardens
Type : Garden
Location : Barnsley

Wentworth Castle Gardens provides a wonderful day out for all the family. A secret Yorkshire treasure awaits you, hidden away in green rolling hills near Barnsley, less than an hour from Leeds and Sheffield. The estate was home to the former Earls of Strafford, and captured the imagination of the nation on the BBC series 'Restoration' in 2003. The estate extends to some 600 acres and is the only Grade 1 Listed Landscape in South Yorkshire. It offers unrivalled opportunities to view the National Plant Collections of Magnolias, Rhododendrons and Camellias, while wandering through our 40-acre Pleasure Gardens, admiring our fascinating monuments and wildlife. Our estate will be a hive of activity until 2008 as we work on our ambitious £15 million restoration project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will restore the estate to its former glory. The gardens will be open to the public during this time, and visitors will be able to witness the fascinating transformation of the estate. The gardens are open from 1st April to 29th October 2006, 12pm - 5pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. Guided tours are available at 2pm, with last garden entry at 4pm. The gardens are also open for guided tours only on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 2.00pm. We can organise group tours at any time by prior arrangement and offer discounts on our standard ticket prices, please contact the Trust office for further details.
