Near Howe occupies a stunning elevated position on a tree lined knoll, giving it glorious views out over arguably some of the most delightful countryside in the Lake District National Park. Originally built as a farmstead about 180 years ago, Near Howe remained the farmhouse to the surrounding farmland until the end of the 1960's when it was converted to a guest house.
Over the ensuing years, the former farm buildings which surrounded the delightful open courtyard, have been skillfully converted to form 5 spacious and uniquely appointed self-catering cottages, which retain much of their original charm and character. Set amid carefully landscaped, yet easily maintained gardens and grounds, there is ample car partking and space for visitors to relax in a setting second to none for its peace and tranquillity.
Near Howe lies at the end of a delightful driveway across rolling Cumbrian farmland, but is within very easy reach of the A66, midway between the lovely Cumb rian market town of Penrith and Keswick-on-Derwentwater, The Queen of the Lakes. Equally close at hand is Ullswater, topped and tailed by Pooley Bridge at the North and Glenridding to the south while in the opposite direction lies the picturesque village of Mungrisdale and further at 'Back o'Skidda' is Caldbeck, the former home of famous huntsman John Peel. All of theis delightful countryside helps bring tourists to the area over an ever increasing season.
The previous owners, rescued Near Howe from possible terminal decline in 1969 and immediately set about the refurbishment of the guest house, providing the en suite facilities and froming delightful family accommodation. They also installed the present driveway and over the ensuing years steadily converted the farm buildings into individual self-catering cottages, finishing the final cottage for the 2000 season. having brought up their family and spent many happy years at Near Howe, Gordon and Christine have now happily retired, living in the local community.
The present owners Jill and Steve are already providing that special friendly atmosphere that guests at Near Howe have been used to for so many years.
The surrounding area can provide many activities and pastimes, including golf, fishing, pony trekking, boating and walking, from the gentlest of rambles to the most strenuous of fell walks. For the not so energetic, Near Howe is the ideal base from which to tour the magnificent Cumbrian countryside and enjoy the scenic beauty of our lovely Lakeland.
You will have the run of the large, well-tended garden and also have the use of a well-stocked bar in the guest house in the evenings.
There is one large laundry, in which you have the use of the washing machine and tumble dryer which are coin operated.
