The Three Horseshoes Inn

The Three Horseshoes Inn
Type : Inn
Location : High Wycombe

This unpretentious old country inn, full of character dating back to 1745, is set in a tranquil village and overlooks a delightful green valley in this beautiful and renowned area of the Chiltern Hills. Added to this, the friendly mix of locals and visitors gives the inn a perfect old fashioned and warming atmosphere. Inside is really cosy with 5 separate seating areas - to the left of the entrance (mind your head) is the flag-stoned Snug Bar, fine for walking boots and well behaved dogs. The real log fire burning in the raised stone fireplace, complete with original brickwork and bread oven sets a warm and rustic scene. To the right of the entrance are 2 further sitting areas, 1 featuring a long wooden winged Settle and the other enclosed by standing timbers with wooden flooring and a wood burning stove. The areas are decorated with some antiques and sporting prints, wartime silk postcards, horse brasses and a selection of ancient bottles and lamps. The carpeted 2 park restaurant adjoins but is separate from the immediate bar area and overlooks the garden and valley beyond. Outside is an enclosed garden with tables and benches overlooking the valley. A particular distinction is our red phone box that rises incongruously from the fenced-off duck pond. Lit up at night, the ducks enjoy swimming in and out and around - reserve charge calls only! A major added natural attraction are the magnificent red kites that inhabit the valley. You would have to be really unlucky not to see a number circling overhead in all their wonderful and varied coloured plumage. These really are magnificent birds of prey, long extinct from the valley until re-introduced some years ago. They have a very distinctive forked tail and a 5-6 ft wingspan too, so are very easy to identify. There are 4 guest rooms including 3 doubles with en suite bathrooms (1 with a traditional stubby bath for the athletic) and a single room with en suite shower room. All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities as well as TV with built in radio and morning alarm. Breakfast, cooked and continental, is available at times to suit guests' itineraries. The inn has beautifully kept real ales on hand pump offering a changing guest ale on a regular basis, as well as a variety of whiskeys and a choice of 6 house wines by the glass. Food is traditional pub food, cooked on the premises.
